Set deep in the heart of the beautiful Weald of Kent, this small family run guesthouse has a warm welcome waiting for you.
Situated just 2 miles from historic Goudhurst village, Hunny Lodge sits high on one of the surrounding ridges, and offers breathtaking views of the countryside beyond. Nestled between the villages of Horsmonden, Marden and Goudhurst, traditional oast houses and converted barns neighbour historic manor houses and farm workers cottages; the whole area is steeped in history and beauty. Combined with a largely Dutch influence during the 15th, 16th & 17th centuries, evident in the building style of the old houses, the migrant workers brought with them the cotton weaving industry and as a sideline hop-growing to make their beer (which has become synonymous with this area) they began to transform much of the landscape we have come to know and love today. The skies above were the scene of many a dog-fight during the 2nd world war, indeed the fields which neighbour us at the rear of Hunny Lodge are the crash site of the most famous and high-ranking officer in the German airforce Oberleutnant Franz von Werra, who was captured but escaped and returned to fight again during world war II (the wreckage of his plane can be seen at Hawkinge Battle of Britain museum - just outside Folkestone).
You will find that with an easy commute to London via the train station at nearby Marden and good motorway connections to the coastal areas of Kent, (Broadstairs for it’s very traditional Victorian appeal, and Sandgate for the variety of antique and bric-a-brac shops being our own favourites) you really can have the break you desire by basing your stay here in this area of outstanding natural beauty.
There are numerous Castles and gardens to explore within the area, including Sissinghurst, Bodiam, Scotney and Leeds to name but a few. The historic Kentish towns of Cranbrook and Tenterden are both short drives away, as is the more vibrant Maidstone, Kent’s County Town and Royal Tunbridge Wells, where you will of course see the ancient wells and the beautiful Georgian Pantiles. In the surrounding countryside there is no shortage of footpaths to discover for the walkers amongst you. Cyclists, both amateur and professional will find the roads both challenging and enjoyable to climb and freewheel down (not for the fainthearted!!) Bedgebury Pinetum, which is not only a exciting place to visit, but also holds great musical concerts is right on our doorstep. For the outside type fishing and golf are also available , but for those with a more indulgent wish, why not pamper yourself at the luxurious Kalmora spa (www.kalmoraspa.com), just 2 minutes walking distance from Hunny Lodge.
Goudhurst, Marden and Cranbrook have a great choice of exotic restaurants between them, including Indian, Italian, Thai, Chinese and of course there is a absolute plethora of great English Pubs in the country lanes around, all of which serve fantastic traditional and contemporary menus during most of the day and into the night, we are sure that even the most fussy eaters will find that dining out is a great experience!
